The Joy List: Why Writing Down What Makes You Happy Might Just Change Everything

Jul 25, 2025 | Featured, Self Love, Social

We live in a world where to-do lists reign supreme: appointments, deadlines, errands… all demanding attention. But what if you swapped that hustle list for a happiness list, even just for a moment? Enter: the “Joy List.” A curated collection of things, both big or small, that spark genuine delight and pumps natural dopamine into our days.

Creating a joy list isn’t just whimsical—it’s therapeutic. According to a study published in The Journal of Positive Psychology, researchers found that individuals who wrote about positive experiences for just three consecutive days reported increased happiness even weeks later. Similarly, a 2020 study in Frontiers in Psychology revealed that focusing on personal sources of joy and meaning can reduce stress and improve overall well-being.

And here’s the twist: happiness isn’t always loud or obvious. Sometimes it’s in the shadows, waiting to be noticed.

Think beyond bubble baths and sunsets. The secret sauce is authenticity. Your joy list should reflect you. To kickstart your list, try these unconventional but smile-inducing ideas:

  • 💿 Listening to your middle school playlist (cringe… but also iconic)
  • 📬 Getting unexpected junk mail with your name on it—oddly satisfying
  • 🧃 Drinking juice out of a fancy wine glass
  • 🧦 Wearing fuzzy socks straight from the dryer
  • 🔮 Rearranging your crystals, even if you’re not sure what they do
  • 🎭 Saying “no” without guilt (yes, this one deserves a parade)

These are just a few ideas. You must make this JOY list your own. One that sparks happiness to only you, it should be unique to your interest, your ‘likes’, and what genuinely brings you happiness. Make it fun and, most importantly, make it stress-free.

The beaty of having this list is that you start noticing joy more often. You begin to claim happiness as a non-negotiable, not a reward. And on those tough days, your list becomes a lighthouse—reminding you of what lifts you. It’s also there for you on those rainy days, where you want to slow down and only do things that matter to you. Let it be your guide.

This week, grab your journal, planner, or favorite sticky notes. Write down at least 10 things—quirky, cozy, or bizarre—that genuinely spark joy. Then keep adding to it. Treat your joy list like a personal power source. Recharge as needed. Here is mine!
